CREATIVE THERAPIES, TO INSPIRE AND MOTIVATE
Young people (children and adolescents) are easily bored and do not engage with the usual adult methods and approaches of talking therapies, re Clinical Hypnosis / Hypnotherapy or Counselling (CBT & SFB).  Even the choice of background music and tone and speed of voice can affect the therapy session and the potential result.  I have worked with many children and adolescent teenagers, using one or more improvement methods of Counselling (CBT & SFB), Hypnosis / Hypnotherapy and Coaching.  My first meeting normally just involves getting to know the child or adolescent teenager and breaking the ice in a non-threatening way.  I have a small, quiet, well behaved dog, a blue/grey whippet called Bobby.  He does not bark or jump up and moves around slowly and gently.  Bobby is a trained and registered PAT Dog, (Patient Assisted Therapy) I used to take him to visit people in nursing homes and his warmth created a quick rapport.  Children and adolescents usually love to stroke Bobby, unless they have a Dog Phobia (then Bobby doesn't come in till session 2).  They often say to their parents after the first visit, 'when are we going to see the lady with Bobby!'  Guess what, they forget my name, but remember Bobby's - haha!!

See and click left tab button, my A to Z adult list, as there are many challenges on there that children and adolescent teenagers are also held back with.  However, the most common are separation / attachment anxiety, insomnia, bed-wetting, dark bedroom, low confidence / self esteem, anxiety / stress, depression, ADHD, bullying, insomnia, anger / aggression, attention seeking, difficulty in sharing toys / possessions, parental break-up, abuse / neglect, abandonment, weight management / eating disorders, nail biting, hair pulling.  Also fears / phobias e.g. dogs, being sick, IBS, dentists, needles, taking blood, heights, death, etc.

Children and adolescent teenagers can be highly confused and worried when they are faced with unexpected changes or pressures, e.g. parental break-up, house moves, new school, bullying, loss of friends, loss of local grandparent support, death, lack of friends, etc.  They can easily internalise their thoughts and become stressed, the external signs may be that they act withdrawn, or eat less or more, or want to stay alone in  their room, or not want to go to school, or escape back out of school.  They tend to feel they are the only ones who have ever experienced these feelings and thoughts.  The speed and availablity of communication e.g. internet and TV, even present more stress and peer pressures.  Parents can sometimes help to create a 'too busy', stressful diary for them after school and weekends, e.g. sports, singing, dancing, private study tutors.  These activities also often involve exams and tests, adding to the school test / exam pressures.   This leaves little time to just be a child or adolescent teenager, to  relax and develop and have the important 'down time', that we all need to avoid stress.

We also now live in a society that wants instant labels / diagnosis and instant cures.  Parents often demand, expect and pressurise GPs and Consultants for medication.  The most common problem I encounter is where childhood stress / anxiety has been mis-diagnosed as depression.  Of course we can feel fed up and sad and frustrated when we have anger and stress that we cannot control or communicate.  However, sometimes a diagnosis of depression and provision of antidpressants just reduces or covers up the stress or anger symptoms, where the clues may lie in the stress reduction, allowing the coping empowerment towards recovery.

The methods of Counselling I use for young people are a combination of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and BSFT (Brief Solution Focused Therapy).  Both of these methods focus on a preferred, better, future way of thinking, feeling and acting.  Methods of course must relate appropriately to the age and development of the young person. These may include imagining a TV which they can tune in to the future, or a crystal ball, or toys, or drawing, to identify how do they want to feel?  It may also involve asking the miracle question: 'if you could perform a few miracles whilst you were asleep and your problems were solved and you felt better, how would you feel after the next morning, tell me more?'  These positive forward visualisations, empower to move forwards, as coping methods are explained and practised.  I also include some breathing and relaxation methods, to reduce stress and empower self control, motivation and focus.  However, if Clinical Hypnosis / Hypnotherapy is added to the Counselling mix then the number of sessions are reduced, as the resistance to moving forward is more quickly and effectively reduced.

A few years ago before starting my practice I worked as Manager for 2 years with many young challenging  teenagers aged 16 to 19 who lived within a large homeless high-support hostel.  I also managed attached development projects, to empower basic skills, job skills, confidence/self-esteem, health education, substance misuse, crime distraction, anger, communication, mental health, learning difficulties, etc.  Their main problems and challenges were connected to attachement / separation anxiety, low confidence/self esteem, addictions, depression, anxiety, unemployment, insecurities, poverty, rejection, abuse, etc.
